Forged in the fires of racing development, the XL 1200 was Harley-Davidson’s ‘hot rod’ to the market at large, with performance at the forefront of its design. The Harley-Davidson XL 1200 is powered by an air-cooled Sportster derived V-twin engine with a displacement of 1,202 cc, which was good for a sizeable 81 horsepower and 70 ft-lb of torque. The V-twin engine is wrapped in a steel tubular frame, which provides clear feedback either in a corner or on a long open road. Up front, the XL incorporates cartridge style damping technology, while the dual shock absorbers out back come with adjustable preload that can be adjusted to the rider’s needs. With an aggresive setup of a 120/70-ZR18 front and a 180/55ZR-17 in the rear, the XL now had a wider array of performance-based tires to choose from. As Rider Magazine put it: “This monster is the best-handling Harley I’ve ever ridden!”
