Affectionately known as the King of Baja, the XR650R was a totally new bike compared to its XR600 predecessor. An innovative 649-cc, liquid-cooled lightweight SOHC engine weighing in at only 88 pounds was seamlessly mated to an aluminum box frame, 40mm carbs, and five-speed transmission.
Built to challenge Kawasaki’s long-standing desert racing success with the KX500, the big XR was specialized, capable, and most importantly, reliable. Kawi dropped out of Baja by the time that the 650R made its debut in the 1999 Baja 1000, but Honda won easily (and kept doing so). Dubbed the “Big Red Pig,” the Honda XR650R has gleaned a cult-like following among Honda fans and remains to this day one of the most outstanding open class enduro bikes on the market – for those of you that aren’t scared of a kickstarter.
