After Yamaha withdrew from Grand Prix racing at the end of the 1968 season, the marque continued to supply privateers with off-the-shelf race bikes. Despite solid 250cc and 350cc representation, though, Yamaha technically didn’t offer anything for the 125cc class.
Come 1973, Yamaha finally filled the gap in its lineup with the TA125. Based on the AS3, the bike borrowed many parts from its road-going sibling — including direct carryovers such as the swingarm and rear wheel.
Even the air-cooled two-stroke twin was similar, albeit with plenty of performance modifications. In addition to changing the porting and lining the bores with chrome, Yamaha also fitted it with new pistons and exhaust, resulting in some 24 horsepower at 12,500rpm. Most bikes came specced with a 5-speed transmission, though 6 speeds were a factory option, and even 7 speeds were available for road use.
Per the seller, the TA125 you see before you was raced by Steve Baker, whose accolades include three-time Canadian national champion, Formula 750 World Champion, and runner-up in the World GP500. The seller notes that he has “verified via telephone call and photos sent to Steve Baker. This bike is painted in the same livery as his other 70’s race bikes.”
