Not many motorcycles bear a name as iconic as the Gold Wing. First released in 1974 with the original GL1000 model, the Gold Wing brought with it an innovative combination of power, comfort, and leading edge technology (for the time). With roughly 80 horsepower, 61 ft./lbs. of torque, and features such as an electric start, auxiliary power for accessories, and more luggage than a mid-sized SUV, the original GL1000 was a hit for the sport-touring market. By the turn of the decade, Honda was in full swing with the development of the Gold Wing line.
New for 1981, Honda released the Honda GL1100. With a horizontally opposed, liquid-cooled four-cylinder engine coming in at a sizeable 1085cc, the GL1100 offered a smooth yet exciting riding experience that was tweaked to reduce the vibrations in the previous model. With the bigger mill came an increase in power, with the newer GL1100 making approximately 81 horsepower and a heartier 67 ft./lbs. of torque.
Beyond the performance numbers came a new liquid-cooled engine, good for those long days in the saddle where temperature control and overheating could be a major issue. It was clear that Honda wasn’t content to sit on back on their laurels just yet, because the new for ’81 ‘Interstate’ model came with even more add-ons and features, such as a full fairing, one of the first ever introductions of EFI, and integrated hard luggage and trunk. With more accessories and add-ons than most modern day vehicles, it was no surprise that the Gold Wing was – and still is – known as the ‘Ultimate Tourer’.
