Suzuki pulled the cover off the first-year GSX-R750 at the 1984 Cologne Motor Show, before its official launch in March of 1985. Upon its release, the Gixxer was unquestionably king, setting a new benchmark in the industry.
For the second generation, Suzuki revamped just about everything in preparation for its 1988 debut. The aerodynamics were improved (11% less drag), the wheelbase was shortest in class (140cm), and the alloy frame was stronger (60% more rigidity). There were several other upgrades (such as a new short-stroke 748cc engine), but one specific change would end up becoming a nickname for the entire generation – the “slingshot” Mikuni BST36SS carbs.
Basic specifications were 112 horsepower, 55 lb-ft of torque, and a dry weight of 430 pounds. New for ’88 were 17″ wheels, while braking duties were handled by 320mm dual hydraulic discs up front and a 220mm hydraulic disc in the rear.
Manufactured in November of 1988, this example is VIN: JS1GR77A5K2101676. The seller purchased the bike new from Cycle M in Rockford, IL on 11/15/1990. He notes that he still has the original purchase receipt and Odometer Disclosure Statement.
The odometer shows 4,083 miles. The seller states that “it was always stored indoors and treated gently. For the last 25 years the bike was stored inactive in a garage. It is one of the lowest mileage, original examples available from this era.”
Maintenance:
The seller reports that he has records for work performed on 6/1/1993 (3,200 miles) and 6/6/2023 (4,081 miles).
Per the most recent service: “on 6/6/2023 the bike was thoroughly serviced by Brian’s Motorsports in Antioch Illinois at a cost of $1961.50. The goal was to bring the bike out of storage and back into perfect running condition. Just about every consumable on the bike was replaced including the spark plugs, battery, carb parts (float needle, seat, O-rings), intake boots, brake fluid, engine oil, and oil filter. The carbs were removed, disassembled, cleaned, and rebuilt. The gas tank was removed and thoroughly cleaned. The rear brake caliper was removed, disassembled, cleaned, and rebuilt, and the front brakes were bled. The chain was adjusted and the bike the test driven with a ‘runs great’ evaluation. Brian (the mechanic) is available to speak with interested bidders.”
He states that the only mechanical issue is a non-functioning horn.
Modifications:
Vance & Hines exhaust.
Not pictured: Dyno Jet Kit, aftermarket Intake Boots.
Inside of the tank:
It is riding on its original Michelin A59X/M59X tires.
The sale includes one key.
Cosmetic Blemishes: please see the album up top for all known cosmetic blemishes. Here is a selection: “There is some minor surface rust on the header and a bit of pitting near the muffler end that can most likely be buffed out.”
Per the seller: “The original exterior is a 9 of 10. It’s in great shape and has super low mileage.”
