Back in the early 80s, BMW had begun to move away from its trademark boxer engine. The Japanese competition was dominating the market with its efficient inline fours, and the horizontally-opposed twin was proving a little long in the tooth. Accordingly, BMW released its own water-cooled triples and fours in the form of the K75 and the K100.

While this allowed the German brand to close the gap on the likes of Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, and Yamaha, the boxer fanbase remained steadfast in its loyalty. And for good reason.

With models such as the R100, BMW had been making incremental improvements since the series’ introduction. On the road, this meant that the big twin benefitted from disc brakes front and rear, a set of cast-aluminum wheels, an electronic ignition, and other impactful upgrades. Beyond being fitted with high-quality components, BMW’s boxer engine was both incredibly reliable and also easy to work on — even for your average shade tree mechanic.

Over the course of the R100’s production life, BMW introduced several variations, including the CS, the GS, the RS, the RS, the S, and the ST. The standard R100 (like the being offered here) boasted sleek naked styling, a comfortable two-up seat, and some optional luggage racks to bring your belongings with you for the ride. Output for the 980cc twin amounted to roughly 60hp.

Manufactured in September of 1983, this example is VIN: WB1043507E6176995. Per the seller, it was “The original owner ordered the bike from the factory and had it shipped from The Netherlands to Texas. At some point, he moved to Washington State. I bought the bike through a dealer directly from his estate.”

During his ownership, the seller has covered approximately 600 miles. The odometer shows 31,955 miles.

The seller notes that, “this R100 was ordered from the factory with optional dual-horns and a very rare kick-starter.”

He has provided the original purchase receipt.

Inside of the tank:

It is riding on Michelin Road Classic tires with date codes of 4020 and 4120.

Cosmetic Blemishes: please see the album up top for all known cosmetic blemishes. Here is a selection:
“There is light patina from being used and ridden.”

“The bike had a small dent in the tank that I had addressed by a paintless dent removal technician. It has nearly disappeared.”

“There are other paint imperfections that I chose to leave as-is in the spirit of  ‘they are only original once.’
