If you’re not familiar with this monster motard, here’s the short version: in the spring of 2005, Ducati designer Pierre Terblanche pitched management on an extreme street fighter — street performance in a new aesthetic package. The concept bike debuted that fall in Milan. Based on the hugely positive reaction the bike received from motorcyclists around the world, company president Federico Minoli green-lighted the project immediately. It has been one of Ducati’s most popular bikes since due to its torque and agility.
Similar in many respects (steering geometry, wheelbase, seat height, and suspension travel) to the award winning Multistrada, the Hypermotard has changed little since its first appearance. The LED front turn indicators were relocated from the backs of the folding, handlebar-end-mounted mirrors to the neighboring hand guards; the wide, tubular handlebar was raised; the gas tank was widened by half an inch to allow a fuel capacity of nearly 3.3 gallons; the single 320mm front brake rotor was replaced with a pair of 305mm semi-floating discs; and the taillight was mounted higher to meet homologation standards.
As its name suggests, the 1100 was powered by the Ducati’s venerable air-cooled, fuel-injected, two-valve-per-cylinder, desmo V-Twin. Displacing 1078cc — up from 992cc — the engine produced a claimed 90 horsepower and 76 foot-pounds of torque. Dry weight was said to be 390 pounds. In 2010 Ducati proclaimed the bike has changed enough and “evolved”, hence the Evo moniker, with the higher compression engine putting out 5hp more, outputting 95 bhp at 7,500 rpm.
