When Ducati debuted the original Multistrada in 2003, the bike made for a dramatic departure from the firm’s usual offerings. Named after the Italian word for “many roads,” the model combined a unique aesthetic penned by Pierre Terblanche with comfortable touring geometry and luggage hauling provisions. While the spirit of the bike is still very much the same some 20 years later, it’s evolved to become an even more capable all-rounder.
That is to say: with the fourth generation of the Multistrada, Ducati made a number of changes; the bike introduced an all-new V4 engine, a revised chassis, more ground clearance, as well as a larger front wheel. Not only that, but it also became the first production motorcycle to feature front and rear radar.
From a performance standpoint, the Granturismo powerplant offered a number of advantages over the outgoing V2. For one, it gave riders plenty of oomph for dirt exploits and spirited canyon carving alike — a healthy 170 horses and 92lb-ft of torque. What’s more, it was lighter and smaller than its predecessor. Best of all, though, was its record-breaking maintenance intervals. The oil change schedule was extended to every 9,000 miles, while valve clearance and adjustment was extended to every 36,000 miles.
In order to improve the bike’s off-road chops, Ducati swapped the 17″ front wheel for a 19″ unit and lowered the first gear ratio. Suspension travel was also lengthened, coming in at 6.7″ up front and 7.1″ at the rear. And here’s the thing: the bike was littered with electronic rider aids. Between its four ride modes, ABS Cornering, Ducati Wheelie Control, and Ducati Traction Control, even the base V4 boasted its fair share of MotoGP-derived tech. With the up-spec V4S model, Ducati also enabled Cornering Lights, Vehicle Hold Control, and semi-active Skyhook suspension with Autoleveling.
As MCN put it in their review: “The new Ducati Multistrada V4 S is one of the most fabulously accomplished bikes you can buy, loaded with an almost perfect blend of extreme performance, supreme comfort, market-leading practicality and unrivalled levels of technology.”
