After the polarizing style of the 999’s vertically-stacked headlights, Ducati went back to the single sided swingarm, exhaust under the taillights, and side by side eyes made famous on the 916 – this time with a modern twist.
It was well-received – Cycle World said “On the road the 1098S isn’t just an improvement, it’s a revelation.” The new Testastretta Evoluzione engine obviously got an increase in bore and stroke compared to the 999, but improvements to the intake, exhaust, and cylinder head helped bump up power to 160 hp and 90 lb-ft of torque at the crank, good for a 10.015 second quarter-mile time and a top speed of 173 miles per hour. Ducati was also able to shave an impressive amount of weight from the previous model, with 11 pounds coming from the engine (6.5 of which were just from the heads).
Ducati offered an upgraded S model, which featured Öhlins suspension, forged Marchesini wheels, and some extra carbon fiber bits; just for the debut model year of the 1098 (2007), Ducati offered a limited edition “Tricolore” variant with a carbon fiber Termignoni exhaust and specific ECU. It’s hard to argue with a Ducati in red, but if you were going to splurge for the S than Tricolore was even more special thanks to the red/white/green livery designed to evoke the Italian flag paired with “Racing Gold” frame and wheels.
Ducati did not officially state a production number before the run of Tricolores began, however in December of 2007 someone in Ducati’s customer service department stated that they built 1,013 examples.
