“Cool doesn’t even come close.” That’s how Visordown summarized the iconic RD400 in one sentence, but the longer story isn’t very complicated, either. The RD400 came about when Yamaha made the RD350 a bit bigger in 1976 – displacement was 399cc. Thanks to 44 horsepower, the bigger RD was capable of hitting the ton with a top speed of 105 miles per hour.
Most people know the 400 simply for being an easier to ride upgrade over the 350, but it was also notable for being the first production motorcycle to feature cast wheels as standard. The 400 motor was more than a repurposed 350 unit – Yamaha increased the stroke and in doing so they had to build new crankcases as well. The bike weighed about 350 pounds, and it was the most popular two-stroke sportbike of its day.
This example is VIN: 1A1307645; Engine: 1A1307645. The seller purchased the bike approximately six months ago.
The odometer shows 1,357 miles.
Maintenance:
The seller states that he “purchased with intent to restore, changed course. It was stored since 1986. With no spark. In Southern California. I bought it with goals of lightly using it. I put a magneto and dc generator used off eBay. I put a Yamaha new seat cover. I had carbs deep hydro cleaned and new carb kits to factory specs. I flushed tank seems clean and great shape. Put new fuel lines, new battery, new air filters and fuel filters. Had head bead blasted as well as factory mags rims bead blasted bare. I put new 2024 tires on it 0 miles. Troubleshot some electrical. Had mechanic sync carbs to toomey style pipes. Odometer says 1300 no way I could prove that. I noticed it has a rz front fender. I did not rebuild oil injector I use 32-1 premix. It runs drives shifts but needs rear master, and volt rectifier. I got it running and now I’m passing it on. I would say the bike is in middle condition, would still need some repairs and tuning and restoring to your liking.”
He adds that, “it’s got a charging issue, it needs the oil injector looked after, it needs a rear master cylinder, and the rear brake light stays on.”
Modifications:
Toomey style pipes.
It is riding on Liberty tires.
