The Triumph Bonneville needs no introduction, but this classic Brit was named after the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. Triumph was fairly successful racing this bike, including wins at the Isle of Man TT Production 750cc class in ’67 and ’69.
The Bonneville was produced in its original run (the T120) for 16 years, with a 650cc engine that made 46 horsepower. The parallel twin was based on the Tiger 110, but with upgraded Amal carbs that helped the bike attain 115 miles per hour stock – though Johnny Allen set a record in 1956 with a heavily modified Triumph hitting 214.17 mph over a standing mile.
Many motorcycle enthusiasts consider the 1968-1970 models to be the ‘best’ of the classic Bonnies. Along with offering improved reliability and performance compared to the 1959 original, they also avoid the complications associated with the oil-in-frame models produced from 1971 onwards.
This example is VIN: BD41628; Engine: BD41628. The seller purchased the bike Summer 2022 from a private party out of Toronto, Canada.
During his ownership the seller has covered approximately 50 miles. The odometer shows 12,004 miles.
Maintenance:
The seller states, “This example was extensively mechanically restored in 2007 under the previous ownership. As per photos of the list of work completed, the engine was completely disassembled down to the bare cases and extensively refreshed. In addition to the comprehensive engine rebuild, then following work was completed at this time:
– Front forks fully rebuilt
– Frame painted
– Shocks disassembled, cleaned, and painted
– Oil tank and side covers painted (more about paint below as it was redone in 2023)
– Tank and fenders painted (same note as above re. paint)
– New chrome center strip on tank
– New wiring harness
– New headlight shell assembly and new tail light lens
– New handlebars, levers, and cables
– New tires
– Both wheels reassembled and bearings made good
– Complete new made in England exhaust system
– New seat, made in England
– New center stand
– New, rebuilt tachometer
The bike was acquired by the seller in 2022 after being stored since the 2007 restoration. The following has been completed under current ownership:
– Tank and fenders dent corrected and painted by a very skilled painter to a very high standard to correct 1970 colors.
– New, rebuilt speedometer
– New Venhills speedo cable
– New speedo drive, made in England
– New fork seals and top end engine gaskets
– New, correct rear grab handle, made in England
– Carbs cleaned and upgraded to correct jetting
– New fuel lines
– New fluids throughout
– Entire bike cleaned and detailed as necessary for sale
The bike has been road tested and is working extremely well. It starts on the first kick, sounds great, and runs very well. If a 10 were a concours bike, this would be a 9!”
Modifications:
Per the seller, “Paint marginally brighter than true 1970 colors on account of modern paint mix.”
Inside of the tank:
It is riding on Dunlop Gold Seal tires that have aged out.
