While there is no shortage of impactful models throughout the history of motorcycling, few (if any) changed the industry quite like the the Honda Cub. Honestly, one can’t overstate how revolutionary the little bike was when it came to two-wheeled transport.
When Honda first entered the American motorcycle market back in 1959, the entire segment was grossing just 50,000 units a year. By December of 1962, however, Honda had become a dominant force in the industry, selling in excess of 40,000 units a year… by themselves. Put another way — the C100 opened the door to motorcycling for many Americans, and that was even before Honda had released its famous “You meet the nicest people on a Honda” marketing campaign in 1963!
Performance-wise, the C100 was — admittedly — a bit pedestrian. Power came from a 49cc four-stroke single good for 4.5 horses and 2.4lb-ft of torque, and shifting was handled by a semi-automatic three-speed clutch. Though top speed maxed out at 43mph, Honda claimed that Cub owners could expect as much as 200mpg!
Alongside the base C100, Honda also released a C102 model that did away with the flywheel magnet in favor of an alternator and an electric starter.
This example is VIN: C102A013795, engine #: C102E24063. Per the seller: “This bike came from the property of three time Daytona 200 Champion Dick Klamfoth after his passing. We discovered it when we were cleaning out the barn. Dick and Bev Klamfoth were the first Honda dealer in the US east of the Mississippi river in the late 50’s. This bike is a rare first year electric start Honda 50cc Cub. It also has turn signals. the fuel tank is clean and the bike starts, runs and rides good. The electric start works good as well as the lights and turn signals.”
The odometer shows 1,754 miles.
Maintenance:
The seller states that he has “cleaned the carburetor, changed the oil, and installed a new battery.” He adds that “The bike has been sitting for 40+ years and needs to be gone through. For sure it needs new tires and the fuel shutoff on carburetor leaks.”
Modifications:
Per the seller, this Cub is stock.
It is riding on Bridgestone tires that have aged out.
Cosmetic Blemishes: please see the album up top for all known cosmetic blemishes. Here is a selection:
“Surface rust throughout the bike, chrome, paint etc.”
“Cracked plastic headlight housing and leg shield.”
Currently located in Thornville, Ohio, this Honda is offered on a Bill of Sale only. Have any Cub stories or questions about this listing? Let us know in the “Comments” tab!
