Walt Siegl is an Austrian born motorcycle designer and fabricator who produces custom bikes in a variety of styles including enduro, cafe, sport, and adventure. Siegl studied metal sculpting and jewelry making in his home country before moving to New York City in the 1980s where he built bikes for himself and friends in his free time. Now working out of a historic textile mill turned bike shop in Harrisville, New Hampshire, he releases limited numbered builds and has won multiple design awards for his work.
The foundation for the Bol d’Or is a F3 800 with some tweaks to the air intake and ECU but the primary changes focused on weight saving. This was achieved with a Kevlar based tank, aluminum subframe, new bodywork, which weighs a feathery 8.5 pounds, and magnesium wheels. As Siegle said about the bike, “In my experience, saving weight wherever you can, rather than tearing into an engine to get more horsepower, will always result in a better performing motorcycle.” The whole bike weighs just 340 pounds, over 80 pounds lighter than the donor F3.
You can read more about the bike from Walt Siegel himself in a Silodrome article here.
