Loosely based on the R1200S, the HP2 Sport was the third member of BMW’s HP2 (High Performance 2-cylinder) lineup along with the Megamoto and the Enduro. VisorDown said it was “BMW showing what they could do with the Boxer engine if given free rein and they gave their technical boffins in the R&D department carte blanche and an open cheque book”, adding that “never before has a twin from Germany been so explosive or exciting.”
With 130 hp it was the most powerful production boxer engine when it was released – BMW wouldn’t top that number again until the water-cooled R1250 of 2019!
That output was paired with a fantastic soundtrack, BMW’s venerable Telever front fork, a set of powerful Brembo monobloc brakes, 2D GP dashboard, PVM forged aluminum wheels, Öhlins suspension, and a self-supporting carbon fiber subframe.
As the swansong of the HP2 family, the Sport is, in many ways, the pinnacle of fast R-bikes. From then on, BMW moved forward with its S1000R platform.
This example is VIN: WB10468058ZS70034. The seller acquired the bike from BMW in 2011. He notes that, “It’s a clean title with Lemon Law Buy Back branding. The only reason it was bought back is because BMW couldn’t fix the issue on time. BMW received the bike with 683 miles and put the rest of the test miles themselves. I bought this bike directly from BMW with 2,555 miles. Essentially, I was a 2nd owner and had a full three-year and 36000-mile warranty on it.”
During his ownership, the seller has covered approximately 11,981 miles. The odometer shows 14,546 miles.
Maintenance:
Per the seller, “I change the oil regularly. A few years ago, BMW Manhattan did maintenance on a rear drive and changed oil in the driveshaft. Also winter of 2023 both front and rear shocks were sent out to Öhlins for a complete service and front forks had new seals installed and fork oil changed.”
The bike has no open recalls. The seller has provided the following service history:
He adds that “it has been kept inside a heated garage under a cover. The cover will not be included in the sale.”
Modifications:
Ilmberger rear fender. “No longer available.”
BMW S1000RR mirrors. “These actually work and don’t vibrate.”
SW-Motech tank ring for SW-Motech ION Tank bags.
Billet white Pazzo levers, bar-ends.
RAM ball mount. “For GPS but can also be used for SP-Connect mount or others. Also have a lead connected to a battery to provide charging for GPS.”
Upgraded fuel line quick disconnects. “The stock plastic units are prone to fail. These CPC chrome-plated brass quick disconnects are an extremely important safety and longevity upgrade.”
It is riding on Pirelli Angel GT tires with date codes of 1118 and 2724.
The sale includes one key, the original owner’s manual, as well as the repair manual. The seller will also be providing the pictured rear stand (front stand not included) and a set of brand new hand grips.
