“If you absolutely, positively need to be able to wheelie at any time, this would be the bike for you.” That’s how Loz Blain described the incredible Super Duke R in a New Atlas review when KTM released it in 2014. KTM had a much quicker description – they just called it “The Beast.”
Campaigned by Rennie Scaysbrook (the current Pikes Peak motorcycle record holder), this Team Cycle News/KTM USA KTM 1290 Super Duke R was the machine he raced in his rookie attempt. He earned pole position and an eventual fourth place in the 2016 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb with this KTM.
Rennie is the Road Test Editor for Cycle News – Team Cycle News headed KTM’s first appearance at Pikes Peak in 2016 as a joint effort, where they took a long term press fleet 1290 Super Duke R and converted it into a racer using KTM’s PowerParts catalog. Everything was documented during the build, which you can read here. Additional stories about Rennie’s experience can be found at this link.
