Synonymous with success and bearing a pedigree of championships, the Elsinore name was given to Honda’s ground-breaking CR250M motocross machine that changed the industry in 1973. Bringing back that same idea, Honda introduced the CR250R Elsinore originally in 1978, offering average riders the chance to own a motorcycle that looked like the same factory works machines contending for podiums at every national and international race weekend.
The ‘R’ in the CR250R let every rider know the performance to expect from their machine, and perform they did. The 250 was amongst the lightest in its class – 224 pounds, to be exact – which was largely due to the compact and lightweight engine, which weighed just over 56 pounds. The engine was cradled by a chromoly-tubed frame that had a single downtube and backbone, keeping the design simple yet functional and easy to work around.
For 1980, Honda infused even more works technology into the CR250R; the engine used the same center-port exhaust and double-downtube chromoly frame design as the factory racebikes. These factors led the two-stroke motocross bike to much success, and it was this same motorcycle that Cycle World dubbed “the best handling motocrosser we’ve ever ridden.”
