Description

Please note: Iconic is proud to call Dreamcycle one of its approved iconic locations! We have partnered with the British Columbia-based museum in order to support all of your Canadian motorcycling needs!

Upon its release in 1979, Cycle World headlined their review of the XR500 with, “At Last. A Big Bore Four-Stroke Dirt Bike That Lives Up To Its Promise.” The 497cc four-stroke engine was good for 36 horsepower, the bike weighed 288 pounds ready to ride, and came with an unusually large 23″ front wheel.

1981 saw this front wheel reduced to 21″ and the branding was changed to XR500R. The rear suspension got a single shock Pro-Link design replacing the dual shock set up, and the engine received reed valve induction improving low end performance.

This example is VIN: PE01E5103769. The owner purchased the bike a year ago and states, “Purchased it from a friend who I raced with. He rebuilt the bike then moved to Europe before he had a chance to race it again. I’m getting out of vintage racing to concentrate on long distance off road.”

True mileage unknown.

Maintenance:
Per the owner, “New motor in 2023. Never raced since. Just oil change and test firing.”

Modifications:
“J&M Frame, 600cc kit with high performance WEB cam, Head work by EDCO, rod is new and pin is welded, clutch basket reinforced, plates, springs are heavy duty. Reservoir shocks, Rocky rear hub with quick change rear sprocket, Brembo rear brake, custom aluminum triple clamps, carbon front fork guards, fiberglass tank, custom exhaust, gear shift re-location kit.”

Inside of the tank:

It is riding on Shinko SR289 tires with date codes of 1417 and 0118.

The sale includes the starter and stand. “Batteries in starter need replacing.”

Cosmetic Blemishes: please see the album up top for all known cosmetic blemishes. Here is a selection:
“A few marks in the paint on the tank, welded right case, scratch on rear tail section, exhaust can has dents and scratches.”
