After the polarizing style of the 999’s vertically-stacked headlights, Ducati went back to the single-sided swingarm, under-tail exhaust, and side by side eyes made famous on the 916. This time, however, such features boasted a modern twist courtesy of Giandrea Fabbro.

All of this took shape in the form of the range-topping 1098, a bike that Cycle World stated, “Isn’t just an improvement, it’s a revelation.” Of course, in typical Ducati fashion, the Bologna-based manufacturer also introduced a smaller sibling — sharing the frame and bodywork — known as the 848.

With a dry weight coming in right around 370lbs, the 848 was plenty quick, even with its middleweight status. With a claimed 123hp and 66lb-ft of torque, it could do a 1/4 mile in just over 11 seconds before topping out at 165mph. As MCN said in its review, “The Ducati 848 isn’t just a small 1098, it’s much more than that. It’s a proper fast (top speed is 166mph), fine-handling, gorgeous Ducati superbike in its own right.”

To celebrate Nicky Hayden racing for Team Ducati during the 2009 MotoGP season, a special edition was released in 2010 exclusive to the United States. Limited to 150 examples, the bike is mechanically the same, the difference was with the aesthetic; and the exact paint scheme was used at both American MotoGP races (Laguna Seca and Indy) on Ducati’s 2010 MotoGP race bike.

Finishing off the package is the Kentucky Kid’s signature atop the tank.

This example is VIN: ZDM1XBGV9AB010484. The seller purchased the bike April 2013 from Fay Meyers Motorcycle World in Greenwood Village, Colorado, and states, “I am a huge Nicky Hayden fan, I have owned several other models that Nicky and his brothers have ridden throughout their careers, most recently I had the 2004 RC-51 and then, after Nicky won the MotoGP title with Honda and eventually switched to Ducati, I came across the opportunity to purchase this beautiful machine with the honorary Nicky Hayden graphics and signatured tank #69. I have enjoyed this machine and its prestigious allure that will forever be the Hayden legacy. I have only ridden it on days that provided calm and clear weather here in Colorado and did not ride it to its full potential to maintain its showroom appearance.”

The odometer shows 4,000 miles.

The seller reports no recent maintenance and notes, “It has zero mechanical concerns or issues.”

It is riding on Dunlop Sportmax Q2 tires with date codes of 2410 and 0612.
