Back in 2008, Harley-Davidson released the XR1200, a bike that eschewed the brand’s usual flash and filigree in favor of honest, corner-carving performance. At the time, Cycle World called it “without a doubt the best-handling production Harley to date.” With beefy inverted forks, dual front discs, a large under-tank airbox, and precision oil-cooled heads, it had all the makings of a real rider — not some parking lot prop.

And yet, motorcyclists here in the United States had to watch while those in Europe got to enjoy the fruits of Milwaukee’s labors. There simply didn’t seem to be enough market demand to justify bringing a sporty standard to American showrooms.

Eventually, Harley did quell the vitriol by releasing the XR stateside for a short-lived one year run (it was later replaced by the XR1200X). Power came from a highly-tuned 1200cc V-Twin good for some 91hp and 73lb-ft of torque — considerably more output than the XL1200, though not the only party trick the XR had up its sleeve. Cycle World says it best in their review: “It only took a few to realize that the XR1200 is without a doubt the best-handling production Harley to date.”

This example is VIN: 1HD1LA6129K449729. The seller purchased the bike about seven years ago from Appalachian Harley Davidson. He states “It was designed by a Harley Davidson team with famous racer Scott Parker at the helm using Buell internals. It is designed after the famed XR-750 flat track racer that has won over 26 titles. The team that designed this withheld it from American hands as it was more popular in Europe at the time, but the second year of run the folks at Harley Davidson decided to allow a limited amount to the States. Orange is the most sought after and this bike gained popularity from the Vance & Hines XR-1200 Racing series. It is a niche motorcycle, with the Harley type riders not really knowing what they are looking at, and the liter “sport-bike” enthusiast doing a constant head turning trying to figure out what it is. It has been said by Harley Davidson that this is the best handling, fastest Harley ever put into production. I am quite surprised they made it.”

The odometer shows 34,108 miles. The seller has covered approximately 7,000 during his ownership.

Maintenance:
The seller states “fork oil changed, new brakes/brake fluid, battery, tires, air filter, and regular oil changes.”

It is riding on Pirelli Angel GT tires with date codes of 4119 and 5019.
