Click here for an VINData Motorcycle History Report on this 1991 Bimota Tesi 1D 904SR.

Tesi is Italian for “thesis”, and the name reflects that this bike started as a thesis project by Pierluigi Marconi exploring hub-center steering for his mechanical engineering degree. The first generation was the 1D, The D stands for Ducati as the powerplant was the 93 horsepower twin from the 851, but a model refresh in 1991 came with a displacement bump to 904 – hence the 904SR. The 904 models were built in 1991 and early 1992, and they are but a small portion of the 144 1D SRs that were ever built.

A 1992 review of the Tesi in Bike Magazine called it a “technological masterpiece” because of the innovative front end – utilizing a swingarm and remote-reservoir Marzocchi monoshock. Hub-steering has its drawbacks (like the turning radius of a Mack truck and added complexity of maintenance), but it did a great job of separating the forces of steering, braking, and suspension.

If you’d like to know more about this ground braking machine, check out this Silodrome article here where they called the bike, “The Best Production Bike In The World”.

This example is VIN: T1D00193. The seller purchased the bike three years ago from BellissiMoto in Las Vegas, Nevada, and states, “I purchased this bike as a dream bike with intentions of riding it until the wheels fell off. I love its looks and presence but the thought of crashing such a rare and unique bike kept me away from riding it very often. I love this bike and that’s partly why I am selling it through Iconic; I want it to go to someone that can appreciate and enjoy it properly.”

During his ownership, the seller has covered approximately 200 miles. The odometer shows 1,737 miles.

Maintenance:
“When I purchased it from BellissiMoto, they told me that it was fresh back from service in Denver, CO. I replaced a cracked tail light. I do not have any documentation besides maybe an eBay receipt for the tail light. I have noticed the fuel gauge is not reading the correct level and that the tachometer doesn’t like to work when the bike is cold and its cooler than ~60° outside. The tires are starting to show age.” Please the the Photos tab up top for a detailed repair order from Boulder Motorsports on the 2016 rebuild.

Modifications:
According to the seller, the bike is stock.

It is riding on Michelin Pilot Power 2CT tires with date codes of 4208 and 0209.

Cosmetic Blemishes: please see the album up top for all known cosmetic blemishes. Here is a selection:
“The fairing has a couple hair line cracks. There are rub marks/fiberglass damage on the fairing below the handlebars from what appears to be the brake and clutch lever lines being misaligned at some point.”
