As lightweight motorcycles from Japan began to gain market share throughout the U.S. in the late 1950s and early 1960s, American manufacturers sought to compete by offering smaller, more agile models. Rather than developing a small-displacement engine in-house, Harley-Davidson chose to acquire a 50 percent stake in Aermacchi, an Italian company known for producing nimble, small-capacity motorcycles. This led to the release of the Sprint 250 in 1961 and the bigger 350 in the latter half of the decade.

Advertised at 259 pounds dry, the 350 was equipped with an air-cooled 350cc overhead valve (OHV) single-cylinder engine, reportedly producing 25 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and capable of reaching a claimed top speed of over 90 mph.

One of the variations of the Sprint was the ERS, or “Enduro Racing Special”. Built primarily for scrambles and off-road racing versus the street oriented SS, key differences included a higher exhaust, higher fenders, and knobby tires suited for enduro and dirt competition.

This example is VIN: ERS1074. The seller purchased the bike at Mecum one year ago and states, “Always loved race bikes and racing. I really always wanted a factory race bike, so I bought this when it became available. I knew that it would always appreciate in value, but that wasn’t why I bought it. I bought this bike to keep and just look at, because it made me happy.”
