Suzuki pulled the cover off the first-year GSX-R750 at the 1984 Cologne Motor Show, before its official launch in March of 1985. Upon its release, the Gixxer was unquestionably king, setting a new benchmark in the industry.

Suzuki revamped just about everything for the 1988 debut of the second generation. The aerodynamics were improved (11% less drag), the wheelbase was shortest in class (140cm), and the alloy frame was stronger (60% more rigidity). There were several other upgrades (such as a new short-stroke 748cc engine), but one specific change would end up becoming a nickname for the entire generation – the “slingshot” Mikuni BST36SS carbs.

Basic specifications were 112 horsepower, 55 lb-ft of torque, and a dry weight of 430 pounds. The 1988 model got a few changes that carried on into ’89 including 17″ wheels and upgraded brakes: 320mm dual hydraulic discs up front and a 220mm hydraulic disc in the rear.

This example is VIN: JS1GR77A7K2103574. The seller acquired it two years ago from a private party.

True mileage unknown. During his ownership he has covered 377 miles. The odometer shows 377 miles.

Maintenance:
Front brake rotors could be replaced as there is slight pulsing when applying the brakes, rear brake rotor shows wear but is otherwise fine, engine needs to be revved up when taking off while at peak operating temperature but otherwise runs rides and idles perfect.”

Modifications:
For this section we’ll defer to the seller’s story:
This bike was given to me from a friend, curious to see how far I would take the rebuild knowing my history with restoring classic GSX-Rs. I decided to try something new that I’ve been wanting to do for a while which was to modernize a classic GSX-R with an LCD gauge cluster and LED lighting, and this one was the perfect candidate with missing and/or non functional parts. ”

“The white and red livery was also something I envisioned would be really sleek and retro-cool, so I set forth to bring my vision to fruition! This GSX-R was a club racer back in the day with the Von Hertell race shop out in San Antonio and was sitting for well over 10 years when I picked it up. So knowing its racing history, I decided to tear the engine apart and thoroughly inspect everything. Journal bearing clearances, crank runout, piston to cylinder wall clearances, piston ring gaps, cam chain and guides, cam lobes and rockers, valves, transmission gears, shift forks and drum, oil pump…… everything. And then reassembled using all new gaskets and seals.”

Next the chassis received some love with all new bearings everywhere along with a thorough cleaning. Wheels, fork legs, and triple tree clamp are freshly powdercoated, with the exhaust cerakoted. A lot of time and effort spent in fabricating custom mounting hardware for the lights and tail piece, some assistance from a good friend with painting the bike, a lot of homework in wiring up the switch blocks and LCD gauge cluster, and my vision came to life!”

“It runs very nicely and compression is dead even across all cylinders, it starts easily, shifts smoothly, and looks and sounds awesome. I have thoroughly enjoyed showing off this machine at the Austin Handbuilt Show back in March along with all the other motorcycle events I have ridden this to. But now it is time for someone else to enjoy this unique machine and for me to move on to the next project.

Details of the modifications include:
3rd over high compression pistons, K&N dual pod filters, 127.5 main jets, 32.5 pilot jets, pilot air jets reamed to 1.85mm, aftermarket adjustable jet needles at 3rd from top setting, pingel fuel tap, larger curved cooler from ’92 model GSX-R750, full restored Yoshimura duplex exhaust with debadged and repacked silencer, stronger shift detent arm spring, stronger clutch springs, Bandit 1200 oil pan, reworked front forks with stiffer springs, 2014 BMW S1000RR rear shock, custom cut tank grips, custom bracketry for solo race tail, ’92 GSX-R fiberglass race tail, custom hand-stitched reupholstered seat is a 1992 GSX-R unit to match the tail, ’94 GSX-R integrated LED taillight, LED headlights and turn signals, aftermarket left and right switch blocks, clutch perch and front brake MC are from a 1998 GSX-R 600, aftermarket adjustable levers, custom mounted LCD gauge cluster, modified headlight stay, custom cut red number plates on tail fairing, stainless steel braided brake lines.
