The GSX-R400 was originally launched in Japan in 1984 with the GK71 model, featuring a liquid-cooled inline four cylinder engine with DOHC, four valves per cylinder and close to 60 hp. Lighter than its rivals (under 350 lbs wet), the aluminum framed Suzuki became a hit with its excellent handling, more-than-adequate brakes, and a race-derived heritage.
Fierce competition in the 400cc category amongst the Japanese manufactures was fueled by the restrictive riders licensing rules in Japan that favored smaller displacement bikes and the TT-F3 racing class that spurred continual development of the models from the big four Japanese builders.
In 1988, Suzuki introduced a “SP” (Sports Production) variant which featured revised gearbox ratios as well as rebound adjustment and a remote reservoir for the rear shock. For more on the development of the GSX-R400, check out Suzuki’s page dedicated to the model here.
This example is VIN: GK76A103050. The seller purchased the bike from a private party in August of 2023 and states, “I have four other bikes and little time to ride all of them. My dirt bike gets most of my attention with the others collecting dust.”
During his ownership, the seller has covered approximately 100 miles. The odometer shows 9,076 kilometers (5,639 miles).
Maintenance:
Per the seller, “Seems to run lean at this altitude otherwise is smooth, shifts and rides well. Lights, blinkers, speedometer and tach work perfectly. The previous owner is a certified Suzuki tech, he reportedly rebuilt the forks and shock, valve adjustment, oil change, new clutch, brake service with new pads, braided brake lines, air filter, new chain and sprockets, new windscreen and other maintenance performed before I purchased the bike about 500-600 miles ago in 2022-2023.”
Modifications:
“D&D stainless full exhaust. Red repaint. I painted the inside of the fairing black and installed the carbon rear mud guard.”
Inside of the tank:
It is riding on Michelin Pilot Power 2CT tires which have aged out.
