1999 Honda CBR900RR Nicky Hayden Tribute

$25,200

This beautiful tribute was built by Mark Boxer of Australia, the man behind HoonTV. Here’s a video he shared of the build on YouTube:

With that in mind, we’ll leave the majority of the description to him:

Recently built and shown at the Adelaide Motorsport Festival.

This bike is based on the bikes run in the AMA championship by Kevin Erion’s “Erion Racing” team. The riders were Nicky Hayden, Kurtis Roberts, Eric Bostrom and Trip Nobels.

Three bikes from this era are still in existence owned by Kyle Racing East in Florida and Iconic Motorbikes in California. All worth well north of $100,000 USD…if they were ever to be sold.

Having missed out on the purchase of one of the bikes which was later owned by Kurtis Roberts, I set about finding parts to build myself a suitable replica.

Starting with a 1999 frame, an Ohlins front end was fitted to the bike with a custom CNC machined top triple clamp by Ben from Extreme Creations to match the ones run by Erion Racing. A brand new Ohlins rear shock absorber was sourced, as well as a new set of fairings from Airtech Streamlining who worked with Erion Racing back in the day. Sadly, Airtech closed shop in 2023.

During the time of me sourcing parts, I made friends with an employee of the then running Erion Racing who was about to source me a set of the original Brembo Monoblock calipers from the spares inventory of those bikes. I had custom billet brackets made so that these would fit the forks. On the rear, a bespoke billet under slung brake caliper was designed and made to suit a rear Brembo caliper by Hammond Engineering.

The wheels are a set of Dymag UP7X 17-inch forged aluminium wheels and the rear sprocket was a one-off custom made by Ben from Extreme Creations to match that of the original Erion bikes.

The exhaust system is a genuine Erion Racing system which was been renovated and bought back to original condition.

Some of the very special parts of the bike as the front fairing stay, the airbox and the fuel tank. These are all genuine Erion Racing items purchased from a previous owner of one of the bikes. The tank is a hand fabricated aluminium construction and is much smaller and lower than the factory tanks. The airbox a super light weight composite design which feeds air under the bottom triple clamp and the front fairing stay which was built by Mike Worshum (who kindly helped me along the way with information from back in the day) is aluminum and holds the battery.

The engine was built by Harley from RB Racing in Sydney, much like the Erion Racing bikes is bored out to 955cc running aftermarket high comp pistons. The head is extensively worked and is fitted with race grind Tighe camshafts. On the dyno running the FCR39 carburettors it made 152hp at the tyre. It sounds amazing and has a great idle to it!

As some parts were impossible to find, a period correct Race Technology dash has been fitted and unlike the rear Erion Racing bikes, this bike still retains a charging system and starter simply due to the fact that the bike would probably only ever be used for spirited demo laps if ridden.

Assembly wise, the rear subframe is a fully fabricated aluminium unit built by me and as per the Erion Racing bikes, the frame and subframe have been powdercoated gloss black.

Over the 2-pack black paint, the graphics have been carefully redesigned to be as authentic as possible the the original bike. As I’m a big fan of the sadly lost Nicky Hayden, I built this bike with a 1 on it in his memory.

Not one single part of this bike has been left untouched and it was recently featured at the 2024 Adelaide Motorsport Festival when both Kevin Magee and Jeremy Burgess both commended me on the build and had photos with it.”

Mark documented the build of this bike in an 10-part series on YouTube. Here’s a portion from the last episode, where he takes it out on the track:
