When Honda introduced the CBR1000F Hurricane in 1987, it marked a turning point for the liter-bike class. With a liquid-cooled 998cc inline-four producing over 110 horsepower at the rear wheel, the Hurricane combined cutting-edge performance with Honda’s trademark refinement. Its compact, oversquare engine featured a balance shaft for smoothness, six-speed transmission, and was mounted as a stressed member in a box-section steel perimeter frame. The suspension used Showa components, a 41mm forks with an anti-dive system and a single rear shock with preload and rebound adjustment.

What truly set the Hurricane apart was its aerodynamic bodywork. Honda wrapped the machine in one of the most comprehensive full fairings yet seen on a Japanese motorcycle, designed not just for looks but for speed. Testers pushed it past 160 mph, making it one of the fastest production motorcycles of its day. Yet despite the performance, riders praised its comfort: sensible ergonomics, a broad and supportive seat, and a relaxed riding position made it just as capable of long-distance touring as high-speed runs.

Although the Hurricane name would be dropped in 1990 in favor of the simpler CBR1000F designation, the 1987 model stands out as the launch of Honda’s modern big-bore CBR line. Today, it remains significant both as a period-defining superbike and as one of the first sport machines to balance speed, aerodynamics, and real-world usability. As Rider magazine put it in a Retrospective, “the ergonomics as a whole were fit for a normal human being. Add a pair of throwover saddlebags and a tankbag, and a thousand-mile weekend was a pleasure.”

Manufactured in March 1987, this example is VIN: SC2117HA001595. The seller states “In the 65 years I’ve been riding motorcycles, I have owned six and this was my favorite. Actually, one just like it to be exact. The Hurricane that I bought brand new in 1987 burned up in a garage fire. It had over 80 K trouble free miles on it so I figured I was about due for a new bike anyway. I replaced it with a Honda Blackbird. It was about the fastest thing around but I never really bonded with that bike. Hard to say exactly why, but I missed my Hurricane so I went looking for another one just like it, the one you see here. I always describe this bike as being well mannered and a real pleasure to ride. It wasn’t noisy, no clunking when you shifted gears, didn’t leak oil, no problems in bad weather, easy to get on the center stand, excellent suspension and a very comfortable riding position. It was also very fast. Only once did I open it up for all it was worth. I had it up to 150 MPH and it was still wanting to go for more but that was enough for me. I hope whoever purchases this bike will soon discover why I was so fond of it.”

The odometer shows 23,783 miles.
