Please Note: This bike is currently in long-term storage condition. Per the seller, this entailed “removing the heads and pipes and coating them with thin grease to guarantee no corrosion. The carbs are drained and silicone packets sit in the carburetor bowls to guarantee no moisture. The same is true of the tank. The ports are sealed, the power valves are coated and the coolant is full-strength ELC.” The seller has provided two quick videos from the last time it was run (just over one year ago), we have combined them into one video here:
Ever since its introduction in the early 70s, Yamaha’s parallel-twin TZ racers were a popular choice for privateer racers. The 80s were full of significant updates for the model, including reed valve induction in 1985 and the Deltabox aluminum frame a year later.

In 1988, Yamaha released the TZ250U, which featured reversed cylinders and a cassette transmission. This led to the distinct-but-normally-hidden position of the carbs hanging off the bottom and feasting from the front, which lowered intake temperatures and helped slightly with the center of gravity.

This example is VIN: 3AK000537. The seller acquired it from a private party 14 years ago.

There is no odometer, true mileage is unknown.

“This bike came to me as a numbers matching painstakingly restored-to-factory spec collection piece. I have modified the bike for full time racing purposes, removing and archiving the components from its restoration and reconfiguring it to compete with its 1989 and 1990 brethren. I have competed at nearly every venue on the Eastern seaboard and some races as far west as Road America and Mid Ohio on this bike.
This bike has travelled with me for the better part of 14 years and never missed a race season. I have complete consumable spares for the bike to last as additional 5 seasons of racing, and a full tuning and setup guide as well.”

Modifications:
“The bike is fully restored to new condition. This rebuild included all transmission bearings, full new clutch machined from the 5AK components, new +5mm high duration crank (Ed Toomey rebuilt), new pistons, o-rings and gaskets.

The engine is tuned to a .78mm squish and runs happily on C12 with 20:1 Amsoil. The ignition and power valves are controlled by a fully custom programmed Ignitec ignition module. Internally the engine utilizes the 4DP piston with custom machined 8cc cylinder heads. The U cylinders were swapped with W cylinders for the better transfer port configuration and port match to the unmolested U crank case with the 5mm cylinder spacer plate performing the blend zone.
Race Tech fork internals replaced the originals but again the original damping rods were preserved and FZR rods modified to allow for the updated valving. The original shock was of course removed and a fully adjustable Penske rides in it’s place.

The front (extremely rare) rotors were removed along with their accompanying caliper spacers replaced for 320mm units.

The original 1.5 AH NiCad battery pack was long expired and replaced with a 6 AH Milwaukee battery.
The bike is heat cycled, test ridden, and 100% ready to race.
