Welcome to the original Yamaha R1…sort of. Yamaha introduced the YR-1 in 1967 as their biggest street bike with their first ever 350cc model. The twin-cylinder engine produced 36 horsepower and it started a long lineage of Yamaha 350cc sport bikes like the YR-2, YR-3, R-5, and RD350.
Advanced features for the time included twin leading shoe brakes, aluminum cylinders, the ability to swap the sides for the rear brake/shifter levers, and Yamaha’s “Autolube” automatic oil injection.
As Cycle World put it in their review, “the big race among Japanese motorcycle manufacturers as to who would have a quality 350cc machine in the U.S. has finally been won by Yamaha. Factory designation is YR1, but to Americans the name Grand Prix will undoubtedly become more meaningful and easy to remember.”
This example is VIN: R103090, Engine #: R1-08522. The seller purchased this bike six years ago from a private party in British Columbia.

Maintenance:
“Installed a new battery.” The seller notes that one carb boot needs to be replaced and it has a slight oil drip from the motor. “The fuel petcock has a very slow seeping of fuel around the lever, just enough to make it damp. A new seal may be needed.”

It is riding on Yokohoma Trail Sport tires that have aged out.
