2016 Honda CRF250R

$5,350

Honda launched the CRF line in 2000 as the successor platform to the CR line which began in 1973. Various displacements were released in subsequent years, ranging from 49cc to 449cc. In typical Honda fashion, the products were well received, considered top quality, and became leading sellers – the last letter of the model gives you an idea of its intended purpose: F series are trial and family-friendly rides, X is for off-road, L for dual sport, M for supermoto, and the R series is designed for proper motocross work.

The CRF250R got a big redesign in 2014 so for the next year Honda made some incremental changes: larger front rotor, redesigned exhaust, revised fuel mapping (and the addition of selectable preset maps), and Dunlop’s new-for-the-time MX52 tires. But the big news for 2015 was the new Showa Separate Function Air TAC fork. Ultimate Motorcycling saidthe CRF250R’s handling and engine make it the easiest bike in its class to ride.”

For 2016, Honda focused on adding more power with a redesigned intake and exhaust, plus a new piston and connecting rod, higher compression, titanium valves with new valve springs, improved porting, and a more aggressive camshaft. As Motorcycle.com put it in their review of the 2016 model, “the payoff of these changes is a Honda engine that retains its general smoothness and crisp response while packing a lot more punch throughout the rev range. Last year, we complained about the CRF’s relative lack of brawn, but we have no such issues with it this year.”
