2026-02-06 12:50:00 2026-02-06 13:00:00 America/Los_Angeles 1987 Yamaha SRX250 Panorama City, California - a rare example of a bike that was only offered in the US for one year. https://iconicmotorbikeauctions.com/auction/1987-yamaha-srx250/ Iconic Motorbike Auctions concierge@iconicmotorbikes.com

For decades, Kawasaki ruled the 250cc ‘sport’bike market – though in the 80s Honda challenged the little Ninja in the 80s with the VTR250 and Yamaha threw their hat into the ring with the SRX250. They only offered it in the US for one year in a striking white/red livery with a small fairing and a square headlight, though the model was offered in other countries as a naked standard with a circular headlight.

Powered by a 250cc single-cylinder 4 stroke engine, the SRX pushed out 17 horsepower and was able to rev up to 9,000 rpm.

In a comparison story, Cycle World noted that the SRX gave up some power to the Honda and the Kawasaki (which both utilized liquid-cooled twins) but “at 303 pounds dry, it feels 10-speed light around town. Thanks to the engine’s counterbalancer, it’ll run comfortably at freeway speeds. With compliant suspension and surprisingly roomy ergonomics (only the too-thin seat causes bother), it’s a pleasant, if somewhat slow, place to spend an afternoon. And even when ridden with a heavy throttle hand, the SRX gets nearly 70 miles to a gallon of fuel.”

Manufactured in December of 1986, this example is VIN: JYA2NV005HA000102, Engine #: 2NV-000102. The seller acquired it five years ago from a private party in Montana on eBay.

During his ownership, the seller has covered 500 miles. The odometer shows 13,878 miles.

Loved the look of it and I had never seen one before. My wife is a big Yamaha fan so I got it for her. I’ve had multiple people who have ridden it use the word (delightful) to describe riding it. And it’s fitting. You will not find another one with a nicer body anywhere.”

Maintenance:
Before the auction, the seller notes: “engine was gone through. Rebuilt carbs and other bits and pieces. New fuel gauge setup. Lots of new plastics and rubber pieces all NOS.”

Cosmetic Blemishes: please see the album in the “Photos” tab for all known cosmetic blemishes. Here is a selection:
I steam cleaned the kick stand and it immediately rusted. If I kept the bike longer I would have repacked the muffler and powder coated or cerakoted it to look new. I could not find original intake boots and I did a modification to a NOS boot for a XT350 on the one with the vacuum bib for the auto petcock to work properly. I would prefer a NOS boot instead.”
