In 2017, KTM debuted what they called “The Scalpel”, a mid-sized entry to their Duke lineup with their first parallel twin. It was immensely popular – in a four year run KTM sold over 29,000 units. In 2021, the Austrians took their winning formula and went a little bigger with the 890 Duke – available in base, GP, and R models. Each version featured KTM’s 890cc LC8c parallel-twin engine.

The R model was the one to have (KTM dubbed it the “Super Scalpel”), thanks to the increased power (108.3 hp/69.7 lb-ft at the rear wheel), upgraded suspension (adjustable WP Apex), upgraded brakes (Brembo MCS master cylinder, Stylema calipers with 320mm discs), and Michelin Power Cup 2 tires.

An optional “Tech Pack” (included in this example) added features that performance riders would want: KTM’s Track Pack (launch control, traction control, wheelie control, lap timer, additional ride modes), Quickshifter +, and MSR (Motor Slip Regulation, which works with the slipper clutch to reduce engine braking). The press loved this bike – Motorcycle.com frequently put it at the top of their middleweight comparisons, even in its last year of production against updated machines. As they put it: “If you want to be the king of the middleweight naked bike crop, you have to go through the KTM 890 Duke R first.”
