Walkaround Video:

Cold Start Video:

Back in the early 1980s, a mechanical engineer by the name of Bill Davis had been experimenting with a V-twin frame design that gave riders the custom chopper look with the added benefit of some hidden rear shocks. Harley-Davidson liked Davis’ design so much, in fact, that they bought his design patents and brought him onboard to perfect the concept. Come 1984, Davis’ frame finally made it to production in the form of the Softail. Like his design, it appeared to be rigid at first glance; beneath the curvaceous rear fender, however, it featured some pull-shocks. Needless to say, the bike proved immensely popular — it quickly became one of the best-selling models in Harley-Davidson’s lineup. Between the added comfort and the improved performance, it was — in a word — a revelation.

For the 2000 model year, Harley came out with a new variant called the Softail Deuce. The intent was to combine trends seen in the custom builder world with production levels of reliability and finish. Cycle World’s “Big Twin” magazine was a big fan, saying: “What Harley-Davidson has done here is damned impressive. As an all-around motorcycle, the Deuce is at least as capable as any other model in the Harley line, if not more so. And it accomplishes that feat despite its stylish, custom-cruiser good looks. This, friends, isn’t a profiler’s bike; this is a rider’s bike.”

It shared the Twin Cam engine and 5-speed transmission with the Softail Standard an Night Train but almost everything else was specific to the Deuce. Willie G. Davidson himself said, “This bike represents a new look for Harley-Davidson and I think you’ll see that look carried through to other models in the future.”
