The 1982 Suzuki GS550M Katana was introduced as a budget conscious entry in the 550cc sportbike segment, with a suggested retail price of $2,599, it was positioned to undercut competitors like the Kawasaki GPz550 and Yamaha 550 Seca. Rather than developing an entirely new platform, Suzuki’s strategy was to dress an existing, proven mechanical foundation in striking new bodywork designed by Hans Muth, giving the bike a bold, forward looking aesthetic while keeping development costs low.

Beneath the futuristic Katana styling sat the same 549cc, DOHC, transverse inline four engine that had been in use since 1977, complete with four 32mm Mikuni constant-vacuum carburetors, an 8.6:1 compression ratio, and transistorized ignition. The engine was reliable and nearly unbreakable by reputation.

Where Suzuki did invest was in the chassis and suspension. The GS550M received an all new air-spring front fork and four way adjustable rebound damping at the rear. Hardware that was considered state of the art for the class at the time. The frame itself was carried over from the standard GS550 but was noted for its rigidity and predictable handling. Weighing in at 449 lbs and capable of a calculated top speed of 120 mph, the 550M ran the quarter mile in 13.692 seconds at 95.94 mph.
