Never officially sold in the United States, the Yamaha TZR250 was manufactured and sold from 1985 until 1995 in three main iterations. The first generation (known as the 1KT in Japan and the 2MA in other markets) what was Yamaha called a “Supersports Milestone” and it went on to become a commercial success.

The TZR250 was developed alongside the production TZ250 racer and was competitive in TT-Formula 3 racing with the installation of a factory kit. During this era, the Japanese manufacturers were in an arms race to create the most advanced 250cc repli-racers for license limited riders and track racers alike. These small quarter liter bikes were very different from the budget small cc bikes produced today to meet the needs of restricted license holders, they were brimming with the latest race bred technology and excellent build quality. While restricted to 45 HP to meet the Japanese rules of the time, de-restriction and tuning could release a lot more power.

Keeping that power in check was an aluminum Deltabox frame and hollow 3-spoke 17″ wheels paired with a massive 320mm front disc rotor (half of the braking setup from a FZR1000).

Aesthetically, the 1KT generation stood out from future TZR250s with faired-in turn signals front and rear.
