The 1986 Yamaha FZX700 Fazer was unlike anything else on the road. Powered by a detuned version of the FZ750’s groundbreaking five valve inline four, Yamaha created a motorcycle that blended superbike performance with everyday comfort and upright ergonomics. The 698cc engine was designed to satisfy U.S. import regulations, but it sacrificed very little excitement. Cycle World summed it up perfectly: “It’s fast. It’s quick. It’s nimble. It’s smooth. It’s comfortable. It’s versatile. And best of all, it’s fun.”
Rather than fitting neatly into an existing category, the Fazer carved out one of its own. It was equally at home cruising, attacking canyon roads, or devouring highway miles, earning praise as a modern interpretation of the classic do it all ‘UJM’. Few motorcycles of the era combined comfort and performance so successfully.
The Fazer’s futuristic styling proved every bit as bold as its performance. The distinctive bodywork, unique fuel tank arrangement, solid disc rear wheel, and muscular stance divided opinion from the moment it debuted, but virtually everyone who rode one came away impressed. It was a motorcycle that challenged convention both visually and mechanically, pairing unmistakable styling with genuinely capable performance.
