The CBX was not the first production six-cylinder motorcycle, but Honda’s ambitious superbike quickly became the benchmark thanks to its dramatic styling, advanced engineering, and unmistakable exhaust note. Introduced for 1979, a decade after the CB750 reshaped the motorcycle industry, the CBX represented another major technical statement from Honda.
Honda also developed a four-cylinder 1,000cc alternative that produced nearly as much power, but the company ultimately chose the more distinctive six-cylinder configuration. The resulting 1,047cc engine featured dual overhead camshafts, 24 valves, six carburetors, and more than 100 horsepower.
For the final two years of production, Honda repositioned the CBX as a sport-tourer. The 1981 and 1982 models received a strengthened frame, factory fairing, upgraded dual front brakes, 39mm air-assisted forks, and a Pro-Link monoshock to better manage the added equipment and weight.
