The Honda CB-1 was a wonderful standard in a time of replica racers. Originally built for the Japanese market, it was a beautifully balanced motorcycle that lost out in an American market that was obsessed with having as much horsepower as possible.

Cycle World called the CB-1 “a great motorcycle that never found an audience,” — in hindsight, it’s easy to see why. A healthy 55 horsepower was enough to take this 400-pound bike up to 118 miles per hour, and the upright seating position lent itself to comfortable commuting or canyon carving. General consensus at the time was that this bike the perfect “street weapon for the masses.”

Manufactured in June of 1989, this example is VIN: JH2NC2706LM100882.

The odometer shows 5 miles.

I was a Honda official dealer in St. Paul, Minnesota from 1987 to about 2005. During that time I developed an export business for motorcycles, ATV’s, etc. One model Honda US imported was the 1989 and 1990 CB-1. It was a poor seller mostly due to it’s cafe design and integrated frame engine design. Europeans were fascinated by the design so I made a deal with Honda US and a European importer for 2,200 units. I kept one for nostalgia. It was in crate for 6-7 years in heated warehouse. Had my guys assemble it and replaced the fuel tank. It’s all original. Spare set of carbs. Originals were known for sticking. It’s always been stored in climate controlled space. No rust in tank. No damage..”
