Built between 1929 and 1931, the DL was part of Harley-Davidson’s “D” series, which included a range of bikes designed for touring and long-distanced riding. The DL is powered by a 45 cubic inch (737cc) V-Twin engine that produces 21 horsepower. It has a 3-speed transmission and a top speed of around 70 miles per hour.
The DL features a low-slung frame, large fuel tank, and a sprung saddle for increased comfort on long rides. It was a popular model for its time and is still highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts today thanks to its classic styling, reliable performance, and historical significance. The large engine featured a battery and coil ignition as opposed to a magneto, but the use of a frame designed for a motor half the size left no room for the generator in its usual place. Harley had to mount it vertically alongside the front cylinder, which led to riders on competing bikes to joke that this was a “three-cylinder Harley.”
