This is a single-cylinder racer made by the Indian Motorcycle Manufacturing Company, one of the leading American motorcycle manufacturers of the time. It was designed for racing on wooden board tracks, a popular form of competition in the US during the early 20th century.
The 30.5 cubic inch (500cc) single was capable of motivating the bike over 90 miles per hour. It was surrounded by a lightweight frame made by nickel-plated tubing with a springer front fork and rigid rear end. It was equipped with 28″ wheels that had wooden rims and tires specifically designed for use on wooden race surfaces – note the lack of brakes and a clutch!
This example is VIN: 12E110. The seller acquired it through a Mecum auction in 2018.
