BMW introduced both the R12 and the R17 in February 1936 at the German Automobile Exhibition – they were the first bikes in the world to feature a hydraulically damped telescopic fork. Production of the R12 was an impressive number at 36,000. The high performance R17 was much rarer: BMW made just 434.
The R17 featured an OHV 4-stroke boxer motor displacing 736cc producing 33 horsepower (compare that to 18-20 hp for the R12).
This example is VIN: 12398, Engine #: 77036. It is believed to be #36 out of 434 examples built.
