Brought to market in 1937, the Triumph 5T “Speed Twin” – affectionately named after it’s engine layout – was a groundbreaking motorcycle that offered a potent combination of lightweight, usable power, and reliability. At its core was a 498cc parallel-twin engine that operated off a overhead valve configuration, the motorcycle was good for roughly 32 horsepower and 30 lb-ft of torque.
The motorcycle featured a lightweight frame constructed with tubular steel, contributing to its agility and maneuverability, weighing in at around 380 pounds. Suspension duties were handled by a girder-style suspension system and plunger-type rear suspension. Braking was achieved through drum brakes on both the front and rear wheels. The 1939 model specifically was one of the last motorcycles manufactured before the the fateful Coventry bombing. With it’s approachable characteristics and iconic look, the 5T remains a sought-after classic for those keen on owning a piece of British motorcycling history.
