During World War II, Indian produced three versions of their Scout for the US military – the 641, 741, and 841. The 741 featured Indian’s 30.5 cubic inch (~500cc) V-Twin engine, and it developed a reputation for being reliable and easy to ride – both of which were very valuable in combat situations.
Indian built roughly 45,000 motorcycles for the military as part of the war effort, many were converted for civilian usage afterwards and Indian got stuck with some leftovers (according to Ultimate Motorcycling, the last $412,000 worth) that they also sold to the public for cheap.
