The Cub F was Honda’s first major success in personal mobility, giving thousands of Japanese a mode of transportation as the country rebuilt itself after the war. Honda purchased bicycles from other manufactures and used their “clip on” engine with the slogan “the white tank and the red engine”.
It was marketed to both men and women, was affordable, and used a design which prevented oil and fumes from contacting riders. Using direct mail advertising and accepting installment payments, the Hamamatsu based company sold 6,000 units in October 1952 and 9,000 two months later in December.
The little 50cc air cooled single produced 1 horsepower but could move people at about 22 m.p.h. Production ceased in ’54 due to the unreliability of third-party bike parts, but the engine remains incredibly important to the company’s success. The Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan listed it on their 240 Landmarks of Japanese Automotive Technology and the Cub F laid the foundation for the Super Cub, the best selling motor vehicle in the history of the world.
This example is VIN: 5218633. The seller imported the moped six months ago from Japan.
