For every major motorcycle manufacturer with an established brand reputation, there are countless others whose stories are clouded by the passage of time. One such marque is Chang Jiang, an upstart Chinese outfit that operated under the China Nanchang Aircraft Manufacturing Company during the latter half of the 20th century.

The 750 you see before you was Chang Jiang’s effort to build a military-ready motorcycle. Early production was based on a reverse-engineered Zündapp KS 500; however, once the Soviet Union abandoned the IMZ M72 (a clone of BMW’s 1938 R71), the Chinese acquired all of the tooling needed to manufacture the bike for themselves. They named the model the Chang Jiang 750, using leftover parts to construct something that was virtually identical to its German and Russian counterparts. The M1M model gained a 12V electrical system, electrical starter, and reverse gear.

This example is VIN: 6517203. Engine number: 6513138. The seller acquired the bike in March of 2023 from a private party in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

During his ownership, the seller covered 701 kilometers. The odometer shows 9,030 kilometers (5,610 miles).

I’ve mostly used for banging around town as 45-50 mph is as fast as you want to go in an old MC with a leaf-spring suspension side car. Previous owner reported importing the motorcycle to the United States in the 1990s. Bike runs well. I’ve taken it on multiple 30-40 mile trips and would not hesitate to drive further if I could keep up with traffic at highway speed. This is the most fun you can have driving slow! Lots of fun and gets lots of attention. Moving to a smaller place and don’t have room for two fox body mustangs, a Ducati, an R100S, and this thing. This Chang Jiang is the odd man out as it’s not as collectable as the other MCs and takes up a lot more room. It is my best running motorcycle though 🙂

Maintenance:
Previous owner reported rebuilding the engine (large capacity oil pan, new crankshaft, new rods and pistons, new rings, and all gaskets) and reported replacing the clutch. I bought from three-brothers who had their own hobby shop and did all of their own work (no receipts).

Work performed under current ownership:
New battery, carb floats, new ignition coil/wire/plugs, valve adjustment, fluids changed with correct low detergent mineral oil (most recently in June 2025), New gas lines, fuel petcock, and tank cleaned and sealed, Rust prevention on sidecar body (wax seal), New headlight. I also did all of the work myself with most parts purchased from https://www.changjiang750sidecar.com/.”

Needs:
Speedometer is not working/loud speedo cable (odometer does work), needs a brake light switch and rear brake light assembly, could use some wiring work (brake light stays on when bike is on), low tread on rear tire, spare tire is flat.

Quirks:
Bike utilizes 1930s technology. As such, need to shift at low RPM. Also, can slip out of 4th gear if letting off gas under high load. Has some oil leaks
.”

Modifications:
Matching set (4) of upgraded aluminum rims from cjsidecar.com.

Ural style Earles fork (improved stability and adjustable shocks).

Vintage Triumph-style mufflers.

Inside of the tank:

It is riding on Cheng Shin tires that have aged out with date codes of 2307.

The sale includes 1 ignition key and “lots of spare parts, some new. Includes a full vehicle cover, side car specific cover, and a third seat (behind driver).”

Cosmetic Blemishes: please see the album in the “Photos” tab for all known cosmetic blemishes. Here is a selection:
Lots of cosmetic issues. However, whenever I talked about repainting it, I was encouraged to leave the old school patina in place (such as painted Chang Jiang emblem, etc. on tank). Instead, I ended up stabilizing paint by getting all of the loose stuff off, getting most of the rust off (any left is surface) and sealing with a thick bees wax seal.”

Currently located in Grand Canyon, Arizona, this Chang Jiang is offered on a clean Arizona title with registration current through August 2026.
