While there is no shortage of impactful models throughout the history of motorcycling, few (if any) changed the industry quite like the the Honda Cub. Honestly, one can’t overstate how revolutionary the little bike was when it came to two-wheeled transport.
When Honda first entered the American motorcycle market back in 1959, the entire segment was grossing just 50,000 units a year. By December of 1962, however, Honda had become a dominant force in the industry, selling in excess of 40,000 units a year… by themselves. Put another way — the C100 opened the door to motorcycling for many Americans, and that was even before Honda had released its famous “You meet the nicest people on a Honda” marketing campaign in 1963!
Come 1966, Honda introduced another model known as the CM91. In the United States and Europe, it was sold as the “Honda 90,” but in other markets it was known as the “Cub 90.” Powered by an 89cc OHC single, it was paired to a three-speed transmission with an automatic clutch. As Cycle World put in its period review, “We put a good many miles on it inside the huge Los Angeles Sports Arena, prior to setting up and tearing down the CYCLE WORLD Motorcycle Show. Within the confines of cement walls, the little Honda was docile, easy going, quiet, and altogether a very pleasing little bike, without being a “ladies” machine in the fullest sense.”
This example is VIN: CM91A135060, engine #: CM91E2695. The seller acquired the bike approximately seven years ago. He notes that, this Cub is “a genuine piece of history with only 180 miles on it. This bike’s previous owner was three-time Daytona 200 winner Dick Klamfoth. Dick and his wife Bev were the first US Honda dealer east of the Mississippi river and it came from their shop. The bike was discovered in Dick’s barn in 2019 and had not been used in over 40 years.”
Maintenance:
The seller states that he has “changed the oil, cleaned the carburetor, new battery, modified the battery cables due to original battery style not available, and installed heat shrink tubing to ignition switch wires that had cracked insulation. New fuel line. Starts, runs and rides good.”
Modifications:
Modified battery cables.
It is riding on Yokohama tires that have aged out.
