The Bultaco Metralla MK2, introduced in 1968, holds a significant place in the history of motorcycles as an iconic two-stroke street bike that combined performance, innovation, and style. Bultaco, a Spanish motorcycle manufacturer founded by Francesc “Paco” Bultó, was renowned for producing competition-oriented bikes, and the Metralla MK2 was no exception.
The 60’s were a time of innovation and experimentation, and Bultaco used that to their advantage. Using the successful original Metralla model as the foundation for their R&D, the MK2 took the original single-cylinder two-stroke engine and tweaked the 200cc mill to improve the power delivery and performance, getting it up to a respectable 250cc. With enhanced porting and cylinder modifications, the MK2 could reach even higher RPMs and raised the overall top-end speed by a fair margin, which is evidenced by the fact that this motorcycle broke a lap record at the ’67 Isle of Man TT race.
Hemming Sports and Exotic Car described riding the second iteration of the legendary 2-stroke as such: “Riding it is like throwing a smoke bomb into a hornets’ nest, then climbing on.”
