1968 Yamaha AS1-C Project

$3,250

Yamaha’s first 125cc 2-cylinder “sports” bike was the AS1, and it was notable enough to be one of the models featured in their Communication Plaza Collection at corporate headquarters. Per Yamaha’s site, “it employed Yamaha’s first 5-port (jet port) engine that added two auxiliary scavenging ports to the previous 3-port (intake, scavenging, exhaust) system to improve exhaust efficiency. It was also equipped with twin carburetors, the “Autolube” separate oil supply system and a return type 5-speed transmission for outstanding running performance.”

Yamaha claimed an output of 15 horsepower and period tests suggested it was capable of a top speed north of 75 miles per hour. These bikes were wildly popular in markets like the UK – Classic-Motorbikes calls it “the first of the real giant killers.”

Yamaha also made the AS1-C, which was more of a street scrambler version with high exhaust, high handlebars, folding pegs, and a painted tank (instead of a chrome panel as found on the regular AS1).

This example is VIN: AS1301064. The seller acquired it eight years ago from a Mecum auction.

The odometer shows 10,190 miles.

The seller states that he started and ran it once, then put the bike in storage. The bike has been restored in the past.
