Description

Additional photos on this 1971 BMW R60 are available here for your perusal.

While BMW is now a staple of the modern motorcycle scene, back in the 1960’s they almost left the game entirely. The /2 was getting outperformed by the competition, so the Germans either had to bow out or come up with a significant redesign.

They kept the classic boxer twin engine, but pretty much everything else was changed. They focused on weight reduction and increased power the most – for weight reduction they developed a lighter tubular steel frame, Sachs telescoping forks instead of an Earles front end, and iron-lined light alloy cylinders which replaced the previous cast iron units. The R60/5 engine pushed out 46 hp (compared to 32 for the R60/2)

BMW stole a designer from Porsche: Hans-Günther von der Marwitz, and his creation set the standard for the next few decades of BMW’s styling.

Motorcycle Classics sums up the /5 by saying, “All in all, the R60/5 is an ideal useable classic. Decent power, predictable handling, excellent build quality and rock-solid dependability make it a bike you can ride regularly with confidence. Simple construction and excellent parts availability make /5s easy to keep on the road, and a large and enthusiastic community of BMW owners is always ready to help you keep your Teutonic steed running.”
