Honda created the “SL” line of bikes in 1970 with the SL100 – the lineup quickly expanded to include additional displacements of 125, 175, and 350cc motorcycles. 1971 was the debut of the SL125, and in 1972 Honda added “Motorsport” to the name as well. The SL bikes were street legal but were better suited for off-roading than the CL lineup.
A Cycle World review notes that “12 bhp from only 7.5 cu. in. at 9000 rpm is still an impressive figure, and the lower revs should add up to long engine life, a trait which all Hondas exhibit.” Total weight was just under 200 pounds.
Much like the 100, the SL125 was a popular and well-liked machine. Cycle World summed up their review by saying, “Approach a hill, crack the throttle, lean forward to prevent lofting the front wheel, and the little 125 climbs without protest. All things considered, it’s one hell of a buy.”
Manufactured in January 1972, this example is VIN: SL125S1111265, Engine #: SL125SE1111121. The seller acquired it as a project in May 2018.
“The stamped VIN was tampered with at some point in its life. Investigation reached 1 previous owner but next owner has passed away. I documented the VIN tag before removal for powdercoating by taking a video.”
During his ownership, the seller has covered 74 miles. The odometer shows 4,600 miles.
“A buddy sent me the listing from Craigslist in SE Iowa back in May 2018. Had another friend pick it up and go through the bonding process to obtain an Iowa title. I brought the bike into California in 2023 and began restoration in the fall of 2024. It was inspected by the California Highway Patrol and I was issued a California title in my name. Why or how the VIN stamping was damaged is still a mystery.”
“This make/model and year was my 1st bike. It’s how I learned to ride a motorcycle. It’s a special bike which I have enjoyed bringing it back to its glory but it’s too small for me to ride as an adult so I want it to go to a good home for someone else to enjoy or be part of a collection. I don’t have the room also with owning several other bikes.”
Maintenance:
“I performed all maintenance myself excluding the cylinder rebore and valve grinding. Inspected the clutch, oil filter, and cam. New .50 piston, rings, timing chain, new gaskets, swingarm bushings, fork seals/oil, NOS fasteners, zinc replating of original spokes, brake and frame components using original fasteners and components when possible. Powdercoated frame and every nut and bolt is either original or NOS. Replaced break-in oil this spring. I don’t allow oil to sit in a bike for more than 1 year maximum.”
Mechanical Issues:
“Runs well but the carburetor jetting still needs fine tuning.”
Modifications:
“Fuel tank was cleaned and coated by a radiator shop in Ottumwa, Iowa before I brought it to California. Doesn’t look pretty inside but it’s well sealed.”
Inside of the tank:
It is riding on Shinko tires with date codes of 0124 and 4524.
The sale includes 2 ignition keys, and a pair of aftermarket rear shocks.
Cosmetic Blemishes: please see the album in the “Photos” tab for all known cosmetic blemishes. Here is a selection:
“The seat is original so it shows its age and has 1 small tear and 1 larger one on top at the back.”
Chain guard is original and shows signs of pitting as do the original rear shocks.
Also the rear taillight bracket is original and shows some signs of corrosion.
The original exhaust pipe has been repaired with high heat JB Weld at the back of the pipe.
Currently located in Santa Paula, California, this Honda is offered on a clean California title with registration believed to be on Planned Non Operation.
