The Ducati 750 GT was the first of Ducati’s venerable production V-twins, and its lovely lines set the stage for classics like the 750 Sport and 900SS. Fabio Taglioni made his initial sketches for the bike in 1970, and by winter a prototype was ready.
Testing went so well, in fact, that Ducati released the 750 GT to the public the following year. The 748cc engine comprised two 350cc singles on a shared crankcase. Beyond the extra displacement, the layout gave the bike a low center of gravity, superior balance, as well as efficient cooling and extra ground clearance. Claimed output was some 60 horses, giving the 750 GT an impressive power-to-weight ratio at 186kg dry.
Elsewhere, the Bologna firm fitted the bike with a rigid frame and firm suspension. On the road, such a combination made for precise handling and a responsive ride. Being a Ducati, the 750 GT got the luxury treatment, including flat bars, plenty of chrome, and eye-catching paintwork like the large flaked example you see before you.
Over the course of the 750 GT’s production life, just over 4,000 bikes left the factory. For this reason, they’re a rare sight on the road these days — especially compared to contemporaries like the CB750, GT750, and Commando. Motorcyclist Online put it best in its comparison to the GT1000: “the handling is superb, even though the 60-inch wheelbase requires a lot of planning to turn sharply. But the marriage of big, alloy engine cases and a phalanx of steel frame tubes create terrific rigidity, making the Ducati a confident and rewarding high-speed friend. With its big 4.5-gallon fuel tank, comfy bars and broad, flat seat, it’s no wonder I once rode this unit 1022 miles in one day.”
