One of the most important bikes of the ’70s, the Kawasaki Z1 set all sorts of speed records at Daytona within a year of its debut.
The Z1 has a fun story – Kawasaki thought they were going to be first to market with a 4 cylinder 750cc sport bike…and then Honda blew them away with the CB750. So, Kawi wisely decided to go bigger instead and the 903cc powerplant impressed the press and customers with 82 horsepower. In their home market of Japan, the government mandated a displacement limit of 750cc, so Kawasaki created the smaller Z2 instead.
This example is VIN: Z1F15830. The seller purchased the bike approximately a year and a half ago from a neighbor and states, “Previous owner inspired me to start collecting motorcycles with his Z1 Kawi’s and RD Yamahas. This was his favorite 900 and regular rider. “
During his ownerhship the seller has covered approximately 200 miles. The odometer shows 41,813 miles.
Maintenance:
The seller has provided the following condition report and states, “Rebuilt cylinder head including valve guides, valve seals, exhaust valves, exhaust studs, cam chain tensioner, piston rings. Cleaned carburetors. Installed battery. Starts easy and runs strong. Frame, engine, swingarm, wheels are original matching numbers.”
The seller notes the following regarding the decision to rebuild the head:
“The engine was smoking a bit from the exhaust at idle so we knew it needed new valve guides at least.
We decided to freshen the engine up as needed since it was going to have to come apart anyway.
New piston rings, exhaust valves, cam chain tensioner and gaskets were purchased from Z1 Enterprises.
The engine work was completed in September of this year, about six weeks ago.
We flex ball honed the cylinders prior to reinstalling the pistons.
Gilmour Racing of Indianapolis (Z1 engine specialists with over 40 years experience) did the inspection and reassembly.”
Modifications:
Jetted 29mm smoothbore carburetors.
New reproduction front brake caliper.
Inside of the tank “Fuel tank coated”:
It is riding on Metzeler ME33 Laser tires with date codes of 367 and 2412.
The sale includes one key, original stock carburetors and brake caliper.
